We are living in a time when life is busier and more hectic. With the world at our fingertips, it is hard to detach and give ourselves the space and time to disconnect. As a society, we are working harder and longer. This is why it’s more important than ever to find that balance of well-being and allow ourselves to relax and enjoy the small things in life. Therefore, we should all embrace the Danish concept of hygge, which many believe is the reason Danes are continuously polled as the happiest people in the world.

What is Hygge

Hygge is defined as a quality of coziness that causes a feeling of contentment.A defining characteristic of Danish culture, hygge is not something learned. Rather, it's being present in a moment and appreciating the warmth of feeling that moment brings. Whether it's your ritual of making coffee every morning or cozying up with a good book, these are just two of many examples of hygge at home. It is  an art form of creating awareness in any given moment.

I have always been a believer in taking the time to notice the small things. It’s when I take the time to appreciate the little things, that I feel contentment in my surroundings and in life. Because of this, it is important to me to create spaces that cultivate coziness, well-being, and contentment with the everyday. In order to do this, I like to incorporate hygge at home through a neutral color palette, nature-inspired detail and greenery, and layering cozy bedding using materials like linen and cotton.

How to Hygge at Home

1. Add Texture

To make a space more cozy and embody a sense of warmth, think soft textures, chunky-knit blankets, faux fur throws and layering different textiles.

2. Simplicity

You don't need to do a decor overhaul. The smallest additions can make your home more cozy. In the bathroom, luxurious bath towels, candles and bubble bath easily create an environment of relaxation.

Hygge is all about being content in the space around you. Think about how you can move around furniture to create a cozy space. I recently created a small space in the bedroom where I can sit with a good book or just take a moment to be. It took awhile to figure out a set-up that pleased me, but through small adjustments, I created a space in which I feel wholly content. Overall well-being is found in our every day environments. So next time you feel like you need to "escape" from the daily humdrum, remember to take the time to soak up the little moments that make you smile and bring a sense of warmth to your soul. xo, H
