Dark Chocolate Chip Protein Energy Balls

Being a teacher, I only have a few minutes for a midday snack. I used to live on protein bars to fuel me through the day, but then rediscovered how easy it is to make my own version at home. This week, I’m looking forward to snacking on dark chocolate chip protein energy balls. These protein energy balls are chock full of wholesome, nutritional ingredients and the added protein means you’ll stay full longer. They are also super easy to make, as there is no baking involved and they require only a few ingredients, which you most likely already have in your pantry. I prep these protein energy balls on Sundays and they stay good through the entire week.

There are many ways to make energy balls. If you don’t like the taste of protein powder, which can be a bit sweet, replace it with flax meal. Looking for a healthier version with no chocolate chips? I like to use trail mix, which adds a bit of crunch and sweetness. Honey is also a great addition in lieu of maple syrup. As long as you keep the base of the recipe (oats, peanut butter, maple syrup) then anything else goes!

Now, having made protein energy balls often, I will say they hold together better if you put all the ingredients in a food processor and pulse them for a few minutes until all the ingredients come together. However, there are times when I’m down right lazy and don’t want any extra clean-up, in which case, I put all the ingredients together in bowl and mix them. The energy balls still bind together, but are a little more crumbly. The other key to getting the protein energy balls just right is to put them in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes so they harden. I will say that step is hard, as it’s tempting to eat them straight out of the bowl!

Dark Chocolate Chip Protein Energy Balls


  • 1 cup of oats

  • 1 scoop protein powder

  • 1/2 cup of natural creamy peanut butter

  • 1/4 cup of maple syrup (or honey)

  • 1/3 cup of dark chocolate chips

  • 1 tbsp of chia seed


Put all the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Stir together until the ingredients are well mixed. Then, use a small cookie scoop or your hands to make balls about 1 inch. Put the protein energy balls into an airtight container and let chill for about 30 minutes before eating. The energy balls will last all week if you keep them in an airtight container in the fridge.

*I find that eating one or two at a time keep me full and energized for quite awhile.*
